Upgrading from version 4.5 or below
──────────────────────────────────-
Provided in this archive of TGQuote is a utility called CONVERT.EXE. The
update to version 5.0 is rather simple, some text just needed to be changed
in the control codes of the quote files. This is only a minor update.
There have been so many things added to TGQuote since the release of 4.5, that
we don't think we can remember all of them for this file! What is listed here
is a brief explanation of the feature.
1) Registration. TGQuote must now be registered (bummer!). This
decision was made for several reasons, some personal - some not.
The registration fee is only $5 and you only have to pay it once,
but the benefits are endless. For more information concerning
registering TGQuote, refer to the TGQuote docs and REGISTER.FRM.
From now on, any features that are available only to registered
users will be marked "*REGISTERED ONLY*".
2) RIP graphics improved! You may now select the colors for RIP
graphics! The colors you selected for the ANSI graphics are the
colors used by TGQuote for the RIP graphics.
3) Custom Layouts! You can now design your own layouts for use with
ANSI graphics. RIP graphics aren't yet supported by this feature,
but I hope to have this fixed in the future. However, read on,
there is another feature you can use if you can't stand that boring
internal RIP screen! *REGISTERED ONLY*
4) ANSI/RIP File Import. You can now import a custom made ANSI or
RIP screen for TGQuote to use. These files can contain anything
you want in them - from a simple design, to a complex picture.
For more information on this feature, read the TGQuote docs!
*REGISTERED ONLY*
5) New EditQuote feature. EditQuote has once again been added in this
version of TGQuote. At the current moment, the new EditQuote does
NOT support moving the quote from one file to the another.
6) AddQuote/RemoteQuote revamped. AddQuote and RemoteQuote both have
been revamped for this version. In order to save quotes, you must
now enter a "/S" instead of pressing enter. This modification
allows you to enter blank lines in the quote, making the quote
layout more flexible.
7) SetQuote improved. Many bugs have been removed. The color
selection area has been improved, along with basic controls.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Introduction to TGQuote
───────────────────────
TGQuote is a program that generates a text file containing a quote someone
said. The program can generate a file in RIP graphics, ANSI, or TTY. You are
allowed to enter up to 10 lines for the quote, with 65 characters per line.
If your copy of TGQuote is registered, you have access to more features! If
you are using ANSI, you can create your own layout; if you are using RIP, you
can import a RIP screen you created.
TGQuote has support for ANSI, and limited RIP capabilities. You can import a
pre-generated file for use under either mode. All you need to have in the
file are some simple MCI codes. More on the generating capabilities of
TGQuote later in the document.
We as the authors wish to thank you for choosing TGQuote as your quote
software. We have done our best to provide you with a well layed-out system
for making common quotes (or not-so-common quotes) displayable anywhere.
Whether it be at a BBS or at your place of business, this is a good way to
raise people's spirits or to provide a laugh at any time it may be needed.

Configuring TGQuote
──────────────────-
To configure TGQuote, you can use the program called SetQuote. To access this
file, type QUOTE /S at the DOS prompt. This program is designed to ease the
setup process for TGQuote. SetQuote is menu driven, making it easy to use.
Each option is listed, and has an explanation of it telling what it is for.
-- Set Paths
This is the area where you enter the path that TGQuote will use when reading
or saving information to/from the disk.
-- Set Starting Message
For this entry, select what you would like TGQuote to print before the quote.
This entry can be anything 35 characters in length or shorter. The default
message is "Today's Quote Is:"
-- Toggle Author
With this entry, you can select whether TGQuote will display the author when
making the output quote file.
-- Set Quote Selection Mode
With this field, you can tell TGQuote whether to randomly select a quote or
sequentially select a quote when running in normal mode.
-- Select Color Mode
With this entry, you can select which color mode TGQuote will use when
generating the quote file. You have the choice of ANSI or RIP graphics.
-- Color Configuration
In the entries that follow, you will be able to configure TGQuote to use the
colors you want when generating the quote file. If you are using an imported
file, these are the colors TGQuote will use if it can't find the file to
import.
-- Printer Configuration
The following entries will allow you to configure PrintQuote to your printer.
This feature will allow you to print your .QTS files on a printer so you may
read them.
-- Layout Configuration
This is the area where you select the layouts TGQuote will use when generating
the quote file.
If TGQuote is registered, you can also select to use a custom designed layout,
or import a file. If selecting to import a file, enter the path and filename
at the prompt, WITH NO EXTENSION!! To use an internal or a custom layout,
enter a blank entry.
To generate the custom layout, use the program LAYOUT.EXE.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-- Toggle Screen Clearing
This feature allows you to select whether TGQuote will clear the screen before
the quote is printed.
-- Toggle Pause
This feature allows you to select whether TGQuote will pause for a key press
after the quote has been printed. If selected yes, this feature will allow
you to enter the pause string to be used after the quote file is displayed.
-- Reset to Defaults
Use this option to return ALL SETTINGS to their default settings. This is
helpful when want to start you configuration file from scratch.
-- View Setup
Use this option to view the current settings of the data file loaded.
-- Add Quote Information
This feature allows you to enter specific quote file information. You can
tell TGQuote whether to print the author or not, depending on the setting you
use, regardless of the setting in your QUOTE.DAT file. The same goes for the
starting message. If this information is not included in the quote file,
TGQuote will use the settings listed within your QUOTE.DAT file.
-- Set RemoteQuote Information
Use this option to set the settings in your REMOTE.CFG file. REMOTE.CFG is
used by RemoteQuote to find where your drop file is, what kind of drop file
to look for, the name of your BBS, and the SysOp's name.
-- Change Data File
Use this option to change from either QUOTE.DAT, or REMOTE.DAT. REMOTE.DAT is
used by TGQuote when generating a quote entered via RemoteQuote.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The Quote Generating System of TGQuote
──────────────────────────────────────
The quote generating system is rather unique to this copy of TGQuote. What
the system will do is select a quote from the files you have (Extension .QTS)
and put it into a creative little file for display on your BBS (or whatever).
There are many things you can do with this system.
Needed are the following things:
FILES.DAT -
This file is used to help TGQuote determine what quote files it is
to use for importing quotes. Make sure you have this file, or you
won't be able to produce any quotes.
*.QTS -
Of course, you must have quote files in order to generate the
bulletin.
REMOTE.CFG -
If you plan on using the RemoteQuote feature of TGQuote, you must have
this file to define how the "door" will act.
QUOTE.DAT / REMOTE.DAT -
These are the configuration files. Note you can have separate
configurations for both the quote generator and the RemoteQuote feature
of TGQuote.
Manually Selecting a Quote
──────────────────────────
To manually select a quote, type QUOTE /M at the DOS prompt. You will first
be prompted for the quote file you want to select a quote from. Once you have
entered the filename, TGQuote will begin to display the quotes from within
that file. Once the screen is full, TGQuote will prompt you for an action.
You may either select a quote (S), display the next page (N), jump to a quote
(J), change the quote file (C), or quit to DOS (Q). The default is selecting
a quote. As a short cut, if you know the quote you want to jump to or select,
you can add the number to the action letter; for example, S110.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Custom Layouts
──────────────
If TGQuote is registered, you have the ability to use Custom Layouts. To make
a custom layout, simply use the utility included with TGQuote, LAYOUT.EXE
LAYOUT.EXE is navigated by using the arrow keys. Simply move to the section
whose character you want to change and press the ENTER key. It will then
prompt you to enter the character you wish to use. Note that extended
characters are entered by holding down the ALT key and then typing the
extended code of the character on your keypad.
To quit, press Q. It will then give you a prompt of Yes/No/Cancel. If you
wish to save your layout, press 'Y' for Yes. If you do not wish to save,
press 'N'. To cancel this operation, press 'C'.
To load the configuration you last saved, press 'L'. To reset to default,
press 'D'. Online help is available by pressing F1.
Import Files
────────────
They're easy to create. For ANSI, you need an ANSI drawing program that
supports animation. TheDraw is a very popular choice, and fits the
requirements. For RIP, you just need a RIP graphics drawing program.
For ANSI, you must set your drawing mode to animation. Create your ANSI, then
go back and put down the MCI codes that are appropriate. For RIP, just put
it in where you want it. Here are the MCI supported by TGQuote:
%M This is the STARTING MESSAGE MCI. Ie, "The Quote for the day:"
%Q1 These are the QUOTE LINES MCI Codes. %Q1 is line 1, %Q2 is
. line 2, %Q3 is line 3, etc... Up to %Q10 which is line 10.
.
%Q10
%A This is the AUTHOR MCI.
%N This is the AUTHOR NOTE MCI.
%V This is the VERSION NUMBER MCI.
%R This is the REGISTRATION INFORMATION MCI.
To have TGQuote import the file, while in SetQuote, you must specify the
filename in the Layout Configuration. Enter the path and filename at the
prompt, WITH NO EXTENSION!! To use an internal or a custom layout, enter
a blank entry.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Quote Files
───────────
The quote files are simply text files with special codes to instruct the
program how to interpret them (this may change in a later version). We would
not suggest trying to modify these by hand, as we have provided many special
utilities to do it for you.
Adding Quotes to the .QTS Files
───────────────────────────────
To add quotes to a quote file, you must run the program called AddQuote. To
access this file, type QUOTE /A at the DOS prompt. When you run the program,
you are asked what quote file to add to, or to create. From there, you may
enter in a quote of up to 10 lines, with up to 65 characters in each line.
You do not need to add quotation marks to the quote -- the program does it
automatically.
When you are done entering the quote, press /S. This will save the quote you
entered. You don't have to enter this if you are on line 10. Once you save
the quote, the program prompts for the author. Again, you need not add
quotation marks. If you make a mistake, you can start over -- AddQuote asks
if you want to keep that quote. That's it! The program does the rest. It
creates a quote file with the extension ".QTS" and places that in the TGQuote
directory. When it completes the creation of that quote, it gives you the
option of adding another without having to re-run the program.
Editing/Modifying Quotes Already in the .QTS Files
─────────────────────────────────────────────────
Editing works very similar to AddQuote. Instead of being given blank lines to
enter your quotes on, the lines have the quote you have selected already
entered. You also are given the opportunity to edit the author's name and
note.
Along with editing, you are allowed to delete quotes from your quote file.
Moving quotes will return in version 5.5.
Printing Out your Quote Files
─────────────────────────────
To print your quote files (*.QTS), you must use PrintQuote by typing
QUOTE /P at the DOS prompt. The first entry you are prompted for, is the
quote file you want to print. Next, you will be prompted for an action. You
may select whether to print (P), change the quote file (C), or quit to
DOS (Q). If you select print, you will be prompted for what quote to begin
printing on. The default is quote 1.
TGQuote v5.0 - Copyright (C) 1993-1994 9
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Letting Your Users Generate Custom Quotes
─────────────────────────────────────────
To do this, you must have a REMOTE.DAT and REMOTE.CFG file. These are both
created using SetQuote. Once you have them both setup, run RemoteQuote by
typing QUOTE /R REMOTE.CFG. RemoteQuote supports 7 different drop files.
RemoteQuote will execute, and the user can send a quote to the next user
WITHOUT CORRUPTING YOUR QUOTE FILES! RemoteQuote will generate a temporary
quote file that TGQuote will use and delete once it is detected. Once the
user is done adding their quote, TGQuote will self run, and generate the
quote.
This feature was originally done by using some external method of execution
such as X-SHELL or DOORWAY. When Todd Hendricks entered the project it
was re-written to be done completely internally. This was the first thing
changed when he entered the TGQuote project. <clap clap>

Registering TGQuote
───────────────────
To register TGQuote, just follow the instructions contained in the
REGISTER.FRM file included in this archive. The registration fee is only $5,
and can be paid with either a check or money order. Please make the check or
money order payable to Mark Radabaugh.
If you register TGQuote, you will have access to all the special features of
TGQuote. We will send you a letter, which will contain your personal key and
a list of features you now have access to. This letter will also contain
instructions on how to enter your key into the program. We will send this
letter to you via U.S. "snail" Mail.
If you wish, we may also be able to give you the instructions and key by
calling your BBS. If you wish this method, just leave a note in the
REGISTER.FRM file.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Future versions of TGQuote
──────────────────────────
For the next major release, TGQuote will go through an extensive re-fit. The
program will be completely re-written from the ground up. This will hopefully
streamline the program and remove redundant code. This should make the
program smaller and faster. We're not sure when this version will be
completed, as this will be a major undertaking. We hope to add many new
features, and improve on some old ones. If you have any ideas, read the
README.NOW file included in this archive.
As for the quote files, these will be encrypted, along with the .DAT files
to assure that nothing may be screwed up either on purpose or by accident.
(This also will make it look more 'professional' <g>)

Revision History
────────────────
1.0 02-09-1993 First public release of TGQuote.
1.1 02-12-1993 Fixed a minor bug where TGQuote was not looking for
the file SAYINGS.QTS properly. See Bug Reports
section below. - FIXED -
2.0 02-17-1993 Added the ability to do color by using the Telegard
color codes. This version also allows the ability to
add the authors. Also released AddQuote, a program
that allows the user to add quotes without the need
of a text editor. Also incorporated a new layout.
3.0 03-13-1993 More flexibility added. TGQuote now allows you to
change the header, color, and the author field. Also
integrated in this version is the ability to do a 4
line quote. Also released SetQuote, a program that
allows the user to make changes to the setup of
TGQuote with ease.
3.1 03-16-1993 Fixed a minor bug where SetQuote was not saving some
of the fields correctly. See Bug Reports section
below. - FIXED -
3.5 04-18-1993 Much more flexibility added. TGQuote now has three
layouts to choose from instead of one. This release
welcomes the return of the box layout. TGQuote can
also randomly select between the three layouts. Also,
AddQuote is a little more informative when editing
quotes. It now displays the bad quote on the bottom
of the screen when correcting it.
3.6 04-26-1993 Fixed a minor bug in AddQuote. When entering many
quotes without exiting the program, sometimes AddQuote
would do one of two things: 1) It would not let you
enter all the lines to a quote; or 2) It would not
store the quote properly. Sometimes it even did both!
See Bug Reports section below. - FIXED -
Also, added some minor features to TGQuote that were
intended to be included in the 3.5 release, but were
somehow missed. See Bug Reports section below.
- ADDED -
4.0 07-03-1993 Major upgrade. This version now allows the user to
manually select a quote, generate a text only file,
edit a quote, print a quote, use different quote files,
run AddQuote remotely, and much more. This version
also has many more styles for the layouts, and includes
the ability to do ANSI.
4.1 07-17-1993 Fixed many minor bugs within the program. When
entering an option in manual mode of TGQuote, if the
option was not listed as a valid option, TGQuote would
do something very weird. Many other bugs were fixed.
See Bug Reports section below. - FIXED -
TGQuote v5.0 - Copyright (C) 1993-1994 13
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
4.2 08-23-1993 Fixed several bugs in the remote mode of AddQuote.
TGQuote will now work properly when used with the
included ADDQUOTE.BAT file, and X-Shell. Please read
the READNOW.TXT file contained in this archive for
examples on how to setup your BBS to use this
feature. See Bug Reports section below. - FIXED -
4.5 02-01-1994 Several changes and additions. SetQuote, and AddQuote
re-written from the ground up. The remote mode of
AddQuote was completely re-written, and renamed to
RemoteQuote. More layout styles added, along with the
ability to add an "author note." Maximum number of
lines allowed in a quote raised to 10. New coding
used in several places. RIP graphics capability
added. Many other changes and additions. Please read
the WHATS.NEW file contained in this archive for a
list of what has been added/changed for this version.
5.0 06-23-1994 Several changes and additions. Colors for RIP
graphics are now the same as those for ANSI. TGQuote
must now be registered. A feature to design a custom
layout has been added for ANSI users; and a feature
to import an ANSI or RIP file. The .QTS files had a
minor structure change, and can be modified to the
5.0 format with CONVERT.EXE. EditQuote has returned,
although the move feature has yet been included again.
Many other changes and additions. Please read the
WHATS.NEW file contained in this archive for a list
of what has been added/changed for this version.

Bug Reports
───────────
- 1.1 -
Thanks to Scott Raymond of Shadowdale BBS (718)-934-1843 for reporting a bug
in TGQuote where it improperly searched for the SAYINGS.QTS file. TGQuote was
constantly looking for the file in a set location, instead of looking for it
in the directory set in the data file. - FIXED -
- 3.1 -
Thanks to The General of The Reconstruction BBS (708)-668-1009 for reporting a
bug in SetQuote version 1.0. When asking about the author field, if you used
any lowercase letters, SetQuote would save it as a lowercased letter.
Therefore, TGQuote would not process the information properly. Due to this
bug, SetQuote will now display and save the Path, Filename and Author fields
in uppercase letters. - FIXED -
Version numbers in all programs have been changed and are now the same for
continuity purposes. This is to help alleviate any confusion you may have.
- 3.6 -
Thanks to The General of The Reconstruction BBS (708)-668-1009 for reporting a
bug in AddQuote version 3.5. If you were to enter several quotes without
exiting the program, sometimes AddQuote would not let you enter up to four
lines in a quote. Sometimes, it wouldn't store the quotes correctly. Every
once in a while it would do both! - FIXED -
TGQuote will now give you an error message if it can't find SAYINGS.QTS or
QUOTE.DAT. This minor addition was intended to be included in the 3.5 release,
but was missed. This will keep TGQuote from giving you a run-time error
every time it couldn't find the file. - ADDED -
- 4.1 -
Thanks to Brian Madison of the former Galaxy BBS for reporting a bug in
TGQuote 4.0. When using ANSI, TGQuote would not return back to white on
black colors. Instead it would remain on the colors you selected for the
background (black on whatever). - FIXED -
I noticed another bug while using TGQuote in manual mode. If you enter an
invalid option at the "Select Option" area, the program would give a run-time
error, and then proceed to overwrite your "LOGONx.MSG" file. To prevent this,
if you now enter an invalid option, the program will sound a beep, and return
you to the option. - FIXED -
Also, in manual mode of TGQuote, EditQuote and PrintQuote, a help option has
been added to inform you of each option action. - ADDED -
- 4.2 -
While doing some extensive testing of TGQuote, I noticed a few small bugs in
the program concerning the remote mode of AddQuote. Whenever you tried to
run AddQuote remotely, if it could not find your QUOTE.DAT file, the program
would panic and report a run-time error. The problem was that it looked in
the current directory for the file, (which could very well have been your BBS
directory!) and didn't see it. This problem has been fixed by adding a
simple line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. - FIXED -
TGQuote v5.0 - Copyright (C) 1993-1994 15
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
I also added a feature where TGQuote will "re-execute" itself, in a limited
fashion, to generate the quote. This removed the need to re-run the program.
While doing the self run, TGQuote will display a message stating it is
generating the quote. - ADDED -
NOTE: Special thanks go out to Sam Bergen and Stuart Mackey for help with
extensive testing of this feature.

Note From the Authors:
──────────────────────
Hey gang! This is Mark Radabaugh here. I started working on TGQuote back in
February of 1993. Since that time the software has evolved to support a wide
variety of BBS software. The original version was only TTY, and only allowed
a one line quote of 60 characters, and NO author! Eventually, the program
was modified to allow color via TG's MCI color codes, an author, and 4 quote
lines of 65 characters. Since that time it has dropped TG MCI color code
support, started to support ANSI, and eventually RIP graphics. Feeling that
4 lines weren't enough, the maximum was raised to 10 lines, and eventually an
author "note" capability was added to the list of features. Eventually,
the program was modified to allow a BBS user to send a quote to the next
user.
Eventually, Todd Hendricks was added to the "team," and with him a new
invaluable insight was added. Together, we have fixed many problems seen
with the program - including a very redundant way of making the software act
as a door for the BBS users. This redundant "remote mode of AddQuote," was
removed and replaced with RemoteQuote.
Together Todd and I have seen this program evolve. We are constantly bashing
our heads and "yelling" at each other over the phone. But, during the time
we have known each other, we have become good friends. And, together we will
continue to "create" more programs, and work on TGQuote.
And finally, I want to thank you for choosing TGQuote, and giving me the
opportunity to write it.
- Mark Radabaugh
Author
Hiya. Todd Hendricks here. I came into this project right before version 4.5
was released to the public and I am glad to say I am very pleased with the way
that 5.0 has turned out. I am confident that 5.5 will be one of the best
releases yet. Who knows? We may even discontinue the TGQuote line, and start
a new one, perhaps with a new name such as QUOTE!. But you never can tell.
When Mark Radabaugh originally started on the TGQuote series, TELEGARD by
Martin Pollard was the prominent Bulletin Board software of the time. Since
that time, many great BBS Softwares have come out, namely Renegade, and with
the upcoming release of Telegard 3.0, and all of the other BBS Systems out
there, we find it hard to specialize anymore.
Please remember, if you have ANY ideas or bug reports, please report them to
us. Any bug reports (that are genuine for ALL systems. If they only occur on
your system, we will do our best to help you.) and any ideas that are
implemented in a future version of TGQuote you will receive a FREE
registration, along with all the benefits associated with registration.
Thank you for choosing TGQuote as your quote software.
